Virginia: Writer, Founder of Side Hustle

Name: Virginia Kinnier

Age: 28

City: New Orleans, Louisiana

“Real Job”: Executive Assistant

Side Hustle: Writer, Founder of Side Hustle

How did you get started?: I’ve wanted to be a writer ever since I can remember. My family is full of writers and storytellers on both sides, so I grew up around it. But I think I first learned that I too could be a writer in second grade when my teacher started each day with a sentence on the board, and we had to use that sentence to create our own story. It felt then, and still does now, like magic.

When/where do you work?: I think writers are constantly working, not always with a pen or computer. Observing people and places is a big part of it, collecting details, and freezing time a little with your memory, so you can reproduce it later on in a way that is unique to your own imagination and senses. I physically write at home or in an open Word doc hidden on my computer.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Writing is a lonely sport, so I struggle with allowing myself to have the time to be alone and work on it, instead of spending time with friends and family.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: I think one of the greatest rewards is having your words not only read by others but understood and appreciated. Also just being able to get words out my head onto paper can ignite the greatest release and feeling of self worth.

Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband, my family, and my friends

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?:

Watching others work tirelessly at their own passions. The success, recognition, and praise make it look shiny, but the daily work makes it look noble. I can’t get enough of that.

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: To write full time and create a piece(s) of work that resonates with people, makes them think, and most of all makes them love themselves and others a little more. Compassion and empathy are in short supply, but I believe art can change that.

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

Stop, absolutely, right now, caring what anyone else thinks (still working on this). And encourage others. It will, in turn, encourage you.
