Danielle: Children’s Furniture Upcycler

Name: Danielle Kinnier

Age: 34

City: Alexandria, Virginia

Side Hustle: Upcycling/repurposing children’s furniture.

How did you get started?: I’m just starting to test waters with my side hustle. A few years ago when I was pregnant with my twins, I was handed down an old changing table. I wanted to make it something beautiful for my babies’ nursery, so with a little research and trial and error I ended up with a lovely piece of furniture. Since then I’ve continued to redo cheap finds into pretty and functional pieces for my girls. After some compliments from fellow parents, I’ve started selling some items on an individual basis.

When/where do you work?: This is where the problem is! I work in my living room, kitchen, yard, anywhere I can find space, much to the inconvenience of my family (who graciously don’t seem to mind). It all goes down during naptime or after bedtime.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Space and time!

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: Seeing something ugly or unusable become functional and loved by mine or someone else’s children.

Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband.

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: My twin toddlers. I make things for them to enjoy. Having dropped to one income to stay home with our daughters has been a financial struggle but priceless for our family. I’ve had to become creative with the wants and needs of our family. I never really intended to sell my projects, it’s just an added bonus.

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: I’d like to say my dream is to do it full time and make a living out of it, but my full time job right now is my kids. So my dream is to have the space and ability to work on projects as I please and share them with other families with young children.
