Marci: Artist

Name: Marci Malec

City: Daphne, Alabama

Side Hustle: Artist

How did you get started?: I was always into arts and crafts when I was little and enjoyed making projects. When we were building our house, I wanted some larger pieces of art but did not want to spend a fortune. I went to Hobby Lobby to grab a variety of items and decided to play and see if I could make something myself. My mother-in-law encouraged me to take some smaller pieces to The Visitation Shop in Mobile. I was nervous going in because I was shy about my work, and I told her you won’t hurt my feelings if you don’t think you could sell it, and she bought it all! I have them to thank for their continued support and giving me the confidence to grow my Side Hustle into what it is today.

When/where do you work?: My baby just turned one, and I do have an 8-5 job, so I find myself painting when he goes to bed or on the weekends when Dad watches him for a bit. I work out of a room in my house and my garage-turned-studio mess.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Finding the time to create and experiment with new ideas. Usually when I have a little free time, I create what I already know works.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: I love when I meet someone and they say “Oh I have some of your artwork!” Getting to be a small piece of someone’s home is humbling, and I am so thankful for every customer.

Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband is definitely my greatest supporter and the best oyster gatherer, if you have ever seen some of my pieces. He helps as much as he can!

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: My husband and my son

Have you received recognition for your work? If so, please toot your horn below so we can include these details in your profile.: Every time someone buys a piece of art for themselves or for a gift, I feel the love!

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: My dream is for it to continue putting a smile on people’s faces when they walk past it on their wall or on a bookshelf. Who knows… maybe it will allow me to stay home one day with my kid(s)… TBD 🙂

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

Don’t compare yourself to others; it is easy to think someone does something better than you. Instead, use it as a source of inspiration. I have to remind myself to do what I enjoy, and that if we all did the same thing, life would be boring!
