Sally: Graphic Designer, Sally i Creations

Name: Sally Immel

Age: 24

City: Birmingham, Alabama

Side Hustle: Sally i Creations – Custom designs for small business logos, wedding monograms, invitations, stationary cards, Snapchat filters, huggers (or koozies for my clients outside of Mobile, AL), t-shirts, and more.

How did you get started?: I have always admired art and design but never pursued it as a real hobby until college. I majored in public relations and loved my design classes because it gave me a creative outlet and sense of relaxation. I found myself looking for new projects and challenges to push my skill set to the next level, and enjoyed designing campaign posters for SGA and invitations for sorority recruitment.

After college my friends started to ask me to design Snapchat filters and invitations for weddings and bachelorette parties, and the rest is history. Now I enjoy creating cohesive brands for small businesses and weddings to make every little detail come together.

When/where do you work?: I work after hours when I get home from my full-time job at PERITUS public relations where I create brand concepts for our clients. I love that I can work on my passion for branding both at work and as my side hustle.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: One of my biggest challenges is choosing what tools and design concepts I want to study next. Since I started Sally i Creations a year ago, I know I still have a lot to learn, but that is all it is to me—a challenge. I have found that I learn something new with each project. Each design is like a puzzle to me and with design trends constantly evolving, I enjoy working on that puzzle to expand my skills.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: Most of my projects are for weddings, so I find it rewarding to create a cohesive brand for the bride and groom to pull everything together from the Save the Date to cups and huggers to the Snapchat filter. Weddings are the most memorable day of a person’s life and seeing all the little details that create one unique “brand” for each couple really goes a long way.

Who is your greatest supporter?: My friends, family, and co-workers from my full-time job are all very supportive and help me to think through new ideas and encourage me to try new things.

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: My greatest source of inspiration is catching up on design blogs to see what the latest branding trends are.

It also helps to listen to each client’s goals, because their ideas may be completely different from my own, and help to create the exact design they are looking for. Everyone has their own style, and it gives me an opportunity to learn something new.

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: My dream for my side hustle is to continue to be referred to new clients and to one day be the “go-to” wedding monogram/logo designer.

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

If it is something that you enjoy doing, find time to work on it everyday.
