Chelbe: Food & Lifestyle Blogger

Name: Chelbe Hudgens

Age: 23

City: Austin

Side Hustle: Food & Lifestyle blog called Peachy Jean.

How did you get started?: My family is full of amazing home cooks. While growing up, I always helped in the kitchen. When I went away to college, I still desired the home-cooked meals I grew up with so it went from simply helping to preparing whole meals for myself and my friends. My friends loved that I baked and cooked for them and they are the ones that told me I should start a blog. It took me a few years to listen to them, but I finally started a food blog my senior year of college.

When/where do you work?: I work at Spredfast, a social media software company.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Time is my biggest challenge. Because of my 9-5 job, I usually plan on cooking/baking something on the weekends. The weekends can still be hectic because of life and such, so it’s hard to find time to set aside for prepping, cooking, plating/styling, photography, editing, writing, etc., etc., etc., etc.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: The best reward of Peachy Jean is being able to combine several of my passions and interests. I get to cook/bake, photograph, edit, write, and create my own website.

Who is your greatest supporter?: My greatest supports are my friends and family. My friends are the ones that pushed me to start a blog. My family is so proud of me and is always sending me family recipes to share. My boyfriend is always there for whatever I need, whether it be kind words or a helping hand.

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: My greatest inspiration is the food and culture I’m surrounded by in Austin, Texas. There are amazing restaurants here with innovative chefs who are always blowing my mind with their delicious dishes.

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?:

My dream for Peachy Jean is that it inspires people to step out of their comfort zones, whether that be in the kitchen, their style, or elsewhere.

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

Be patient, good things take time.

When I first started brainstorming Peachy Jean and everything that came with it, it was very overwhelming. I knew that if I tried to tackle everything at once that I would get overwhelmed and that could lead me to potentially giving up. I decided from the beginning that I wanted to be organized and take small steps. This was supposed to be a fun way of flexing my creativity and passions, and I didn’t want it to turn into something stressful.

Haley: Fashion and Lifestyle Blogger

Name: Haley Goodman

Age: 28

City: Southaven, MS

Side Hustle: Fashion & Lifestyle Blogger at Art Fashion Fun (with art by my mom, Sally Wilson)

How did you get started?: My husband, Parker, works for a contracting company that mostly builds hospitals. When the hospital is finished being built, we move to the next place where he is assigned to build another hospital. This makes it hard for me to use my elementary and special education degrees because we are typically only in one place for 1-2 years. So when I left my teaching job in Fayetteville, Arkansas, I decided to dive head first into the blogging world. I had been thinking about it for a long time, and I knew it would be something I could do consistently no matter where we live and how long we’re there.

When/where do you work?: From the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep! My posts go live on my blog, Facebook, and Pinterest at 6:30 am Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and I typically post on Instagram around 8 pm every night. I work from my phone and/or laptop, so I can work anywhere that has Wifi. I do typically work from home though.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Making myself disconnect. There is always something to do or a new idea that pops into my head that I want to act on right then! Whether it’s content to create, emails to answer, pictures to take/edit/link, it’s hard to turn off work mode and put my phone/laptop away.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: Connecting with so many other women! Parker and I have to move so often that it’s hard to create a new group of friends every time we move to a new place.

My blog has become a community that has reconnected me with people I grew up with and connected me with women I never would have met, and that brings me so much joy!

Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband, Parker. My family is amazing too, but Parker has been the man behind the camera for almost an entire year now, and it is certainly not always an easy job 🙂 He has been my biggest encourager and constant source of support.

Have you received recognition for your work?: Being invited to join RewardStyle (most people know it as after 3 months of blogging was extremely exciting! Working with Neutrogena was also an amazing opportunity.

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: To continue growing my blog, working with brands I love, and helping women find affordable, yet stylish outfits that make them feel confident and look good!

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

Go for it and be unashamedly you! I put blogging off for way too long because I was so scared of what people would think. Don’t let this fear hold you back. Go for it and let your personality shine!

Caroline: YouTube Blogger, Founder of Online Beauty Business

Name: Caroline

Age: 28

City: Cape Town, South Africa

Side Hustle: I currently have 2 side hustles.

Side Hustle 1: YouTuber

My bread and butter job has always been my Fashion/Wardrobe and Props styling. With that said, I have been surrounded by many international photographers, videographers, hair and makeup artists, and more which catapulted me into the behind-the-scenes life of all things beauty and fashion. I have learned so many tricks to the trade of shopping secrets and beauty hacks that I knew I had to share with the general public. My YouTube channel is always evolving but primarily focuses on Luxury, Fashion, Beauty, Travel, and Lifestyle.

Side Hustle 2: Founder of my own online beauty business, Nordik Beauty

Hailing from the United States, I knew that I wanted to bring cutting-edge influences to the South African market as there has been a big gap in the beauty market there. Thru Styling and Trend Forecasting, an industry that defines beauty, I am able to tell what clients are looking for and I am able to develop my own brands and bring them into the market.

How did you get started?: I knew that I could never be content in an office job and needed to work for myself. I also travel a LOT, so I knew whatever I was going to do needed to be web-based. I would have to say that my YouTube career started out by documenting my travels Vlog style and putting them together as home movies; and YouTube was a place that I could share them with my friends and family. It continued from there as I got many questions about general beauty and fashion, like “What to Wear to a Wedding?” or “What’s the Best Drugstore Foundation?”

Nordik Beauty started purely as a source for me to get unattainable items that I wanted living in South Africa, and if I couldn’t find it in store or online, I was going to have to develop and import them myself!

When/where do you work?: EVERYWHERE!

Working my main job (styling) makes it difficult in season to stay consistent with my other side hustles. I work whenever I have a free morning or even into the night. I can easily work on my side hustles for hours on end.

YouTube – The beauty of the platform is that I can create content around anything that fits my channel. I film most of my structured videos at home and my vlogs and travel diaries I can do on the go. I always keep my camera and editing equipment with me. I pre-film a lot of videos, so I’ve always got something to edit on a plane or car ride to the next adventure.

Nordik Beauty- When I’m not on a TV commercial or photoshoot styling, I am either at home or out in the shops researching new brands and products to bring in for Nordik Beauty. There is a lot of backend work that goes into importing and developing products, and a lot of Skype convos with suppliers all over the world, so I try to find a quiet place with strong wifi!

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: 1. Finding enough time to dedicate to both side hustles. I have an extremely fluctuating calendar with styling jobs popping on and off my chart nonstop within a days and sometimes hours notice! I always have to be ready to jump on a styling job, so I have to prep and be hyper-organized for my side hustles.

2. With number one being said, I have to make special time for relationships that is uninterrupted time. That means knowing when to put the camera down and enjoy the time with friends and family. Not everyone is as comfortable sharing their entire life like I have become.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: Watching my side hustles grow. They both literally started from nothing! Zero subscribers, zero sales, nobody, nothing. Just me. I have created something that I can call my own, and I am damn proud of it. I get heaps of private messages on Facebook and Instagram about my YouTube channel, as it’s publicly displayed, unlike Nordik Beauty. Women and men approach me about how I’ve helped inspire them with my positive and effervescent attitude, or how they enjoy watching my videos every week and it’s an escape for them.

When people buy my Nordik Beauty products I get such a thrill because I hand selected each and every aspect of it. The product, the packaging, everything. It’s so cool to see it all come together. I often bring my products to set and get makeup artists to test out new products, and I love when they give me feedback. It helps me make a better end product.

Who is your greatest supporter?: My boyfriend, Clive, has been there every step of the way thru Nordik Beauty and YouTube. He loves the analytics of it all, so it’s great to have someone take a second look into the tech side of things. Because I invest so much of myself into both of my brands, I can easily get bummed out when a customer gives a scathing review or a viewer on YouTube leaves a nasty comment about my appearance or video. He’s always there to help me stay positive.

Also, my mom, Laura. Living abroad sometimes makes catering to the USA clientele difficult. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve shipped returned items to her house from customers, and she organizes all the logistics of the parcels. Or I’m sending product to her to shoot for a new video, and she’s sending it down to South Africa for me. She shares almost all of my videos online and loves when I show her new products for Nordik beauty.

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: I draw inspo from literally everywhere. If you could see my phone camera roll, you would faint. I have over 7,000 images on it at the moment. Mostly screenshots or snapshots of things for inspiration.Pinterest, magazines, window displays, Instagram, products on shelves, color palettes, packaging—I categorize them by album. I sleep with a notepad by my bedside, as I often wake in the middle of the night with an idea for a product or a video to shoot. I am a creative and a thinker, so my brain is always switched on and going down rabbit holes!

Have you received recognition for your work?: Social media shares and web shoutouts are the new age trophy in my opinion. With 2 web-based businesses, a share can mean a new branch on the tree, introducing my brands to potential customers and viewers.

Everyone helps each other grow, so by giving a shoutout, you’re saying, “Hey, I really like what’s happening here and I trust you will too.”

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: With YouTube the possibilities are endless. A million subscribers, collab with a top fashion or beauty brand, you name it. I would have to say tho that I have a 10-year-old niece here in South Africa, and she talks about her love for YouTube to me often, meaning there are a lot of young girls and boys watching my content.

With a following of 1 million subscribers, you hold a pretty rad power and that’s your voice. I always end my videos by telling people to be kind to one another and I think spreading mass positivity and the message to be yourself is huge!

This is a big year for Nordik Beauty. There are a lot of cool things in the pipeline that I cannot mention yet, but I would love to see it grow into a bigger beauty house internationally and potentially have an in-store deal with a company like Ulta or Nordstroms.

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

We are all in this together. Starting your own business or brand is scary, especially if you are financially dependent on it’s success. Just keep putting stuff out there that you are proud of—you can never be ashamed to share something if it is your best work . There are going to be SO many people along the way that question your plans or make comments behind your back about you going off on your own. Take it as a compliment. People are talking about YOUR business that YOU created. You’ve got this!

1 YEAR UPDATE (1)Beauty HaulIMG_3285Greece Vlog ThumbnailLogo FA-02

Lauren: Beauty Director, Clean Living Consultant, Founder of Detox Me Tuesday

Name: Lauren Breiding

Age: 28

City: Los Angeles

Side Hustle: Clean Living/Beautycounter Consultant

How did you get started?: I jumped into Beautycounter about three and a half years ago because I saw it as a good business opportunity and I wanted to be a part of what the founder, Gregg Renfrew, was doing. Shortly after joining I started learning about the lack of regulation in our everyday products. I could not believe this information! Virtually anything can be put in the products we use everyday, and it doesn’t have to be disclosed. After learning that environmental toxins play such a huge role on our health, I couldn’t go back. I started switching to safer products in the home and documenting them in a Facebook group and on Instagram. I was shocked at the responses! So many questions were sent my way, and people really appreciated the simple education. About two years ago, it seemed like every circle of my life was being affected by cancer, infertility, and other illnesses that had zero hereditary connection, including the death of my father-in-law. That was when I got the passion and drive to share digestible education on how people can switch to safer products in the home. Every single switch helps to lower your toxic load, and if I can be an encouraging voice to help others do this, then I am happy.

When/where do you work?: When I am not doing Switch to Safer events or taking meetings, I work from home normally in the afternoons and on the weekends.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: The main challenge is working with people. While that is one of the greatest rewards, it is hard when people are not on your timeline, don’t grasp the information you are sharing, or simply are not supportive. I have learned to lean into supportive relationships and trust my gut.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: Not only is it helpful financially, but I have made so many friendships that I would not have otherwise.

I have learned so much from the community I work with. I cannot imagine my life any other way. I get to help people make safer choices for their own health, for the health of their families, and for future generations! What more could you want?

Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband, Greg. We collaborate on a lot of the content I create. He is my video producer, video editor, and content creator. We have so much fun working on these projects together, and he loves to see me light up when I do what I am passionate about.

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: Do-it-better brands (as I like to call them) and people. We are in an age where everyone is so hungry for valuable information and education that I get so inspired when I see brands that are stepping up and giving back, creating safer products, educating their clients, etc. I want to connect consumers with these brands by highlighting and collaborating with them. Secondly, I say people, because I think everyone has a story to tell. Whether it is other influencers who I am learning from, people who are willing to ask questions and learn, or people who have a health issue that cannot be explained, these people keep me motivated every day.

Have you received recognition for your work? If so, please toot your horn below so we can include these details in your profile.: I am a leader in Beautycounter and work with a team of women across the United States. I have been featured and collaborated with a lot of safer brands through my social media platforms.

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: I would like to be a full time clean living consultant meshing both Beautycounter and Detox Me Tuesday together. Through growth, I want to be a positive, trusted voice for anyone on a Switch to Safer journey by utilizing this information in homes and online consulting.

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

Just start and be your authentic self! You never know what will work until you begin. Stay true to who you are. No one can speak to the the world the way YOU can.

Fran: Health & Wellness Blogger, Social Media Manager

Name: Fran Archila

Age: 29

City: Mt Pleasant, South Carolina

Side Hustle: I’m passionate about health & wellness. I want to spread the word about nutrition and emphasize eating foods with real & natural ingredients. I’m not about calorie counting, macro tracking, or “fad diets” but believe that our population does not receive enough knowledge or education on what nutrition is and should be. I have a holistic approach to eating, as well as my lifestyle, and want to show others how we can feel our best through eating real, mostly plant-based foods and incorporate movement into our everyday lives. Although I do cook, I’m not in love with cooking, and most of my meals are made in 20 minutes or less, emphasizing eating good food doesn’t require hours of labor.

How did you get started?: Friends and coworkers have always sought me out for nutrition advice. After years of being told “I should start a blog,” I finally decided to create my own nutrition focused Instagram account January of 2017, as I embarked on my first Whole 30. From there, everything grew, as well as my interest in health. In my free time I listen to TONS of health & wellness podcasts, work out in the local community, work part time at HYLO Fitness — a boutique exercise studio based here in Mt. Pleasant– and constantly search for healthy options in our restaurant community.

When/where do you work?: I work full time at Snag as a Quality Engineer. I’ve been working in the tech industry for over 5 years now and hope to eventually switch gears into health & fitness. I also work part time for HYLO Fitness in operations and social media. (P.S. if you’re local to Charleston, you have got to check them out: free week included for new members!) Outside of that I try to keep up with my Instagram / website, as well as maintain my active social life.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Staying consistent. Between two jobs, my dog, marriage, sleep, and being social, sometimes it’s really hard to want to post a picture of what I’m eating everyday. On top of that, people like pretty images, so editing and staging your photos requires time, and sometimes you just wanna eat your food and be done! It’s also really hard to not compare yourself to other people, especially in terms of growth. At the end of the day, I want to help spread knowledge, so whether or not I have 2K followers or 200K, as long as I’m helping someone, that makes me happy. Being consistent is key.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: Connecting to people with similar interests. I’ve made a ton of Instagram “friends” throughout this journey, both local to Charleston and not. I’ve also connected with tons of studios, restaurants, and other “influencers” in Charleston, and that has been amazing! It’s crazy how much connection a technology platform can bring to your life.

Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband, and one of my best friends, Daniella. They encourage me to keep doing what I’m doing. Daniella especially applauds me for being real and relatable and always gives me suggestions. She also helped design my website! I’ll also say my mother. Although she is not really active on Instagram, all my healthy habits stemmed from her beliefs.

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: Helen Hall, founder of hushupandhustle is pretty inspiring. She is my next door neighbor & close friend, and I’ve watched her take her passion and build it into a successful business in a matter of months. I also admire another Instagram influencer, Austin Kitchen (rvafitfoodie), because she manages a full time job, part-time job spinning, and her Instagram that has exponentially grown, with such success and consistency.

Have you received recognition for your work? If so, please toot your horn below so we can include these details in your profile.: – Part of Charleston’s #tastemakers club
– Part of Verde’s (local salad chain in CHS), promotional team
– Asked to work part-time for HYLO Fitness
– Featured on other healthy instagram accounts in the area

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: To have it continue to grow and be recognized as a place for healthy advice without forcing people to eat or live a certain way. I’m honestly still figuring out what direction I’d like to take with it, but for now it’s a hobby, informative, and fun!

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

Be consistent, and do it with purpose! Don’t compare yourself to others because we all have something unique to contribute.
