Kersten: Volleyball Coach

Name: Kersten Reed Bowman

Age: 29

City: Niceville, Florida

Main Hustle: Real Estate Agent in both Florida and Alabama

Side Hustle: Coaching Volleyball for 12-18 year old female athletes

How did you get started?: My family has been involved in Real Estate for multiple generations. Dinner table talk often revolved around potential business opportunities and/or stories of real estate sales. Needless to say, I simply followed in the family footsteps. I am currently licensed in both Florida and Alabama, working full time along the coast line.

Volleyball in and of itself is something I love to do and have done from a very young age. I played in college for two seasons. Once I transferred schools, I began coaching to stay involved in the sport. I had originally thought volleyball was a passion of mine. I quickly realized that coaching is the passion and volleyball is my outlet for that.

When/where do you work on your Side Hustle?: For eight years I coached year around. I went from high school season, to travel ball season, to beach volleyball season. Once I got married, I trimmed my schedule back to reflect a middle school season and a travel ball season. I now have a little girl of my own and can only coach travel ball season (November-April). We practice 2x a week during the season and have 9-10 tournaments on the weekends throughout.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: The main challenge of coaching is parental drama. Believe it or not, not every child is meant to go the distance at every sport or avenue that they take. Bringing parents back to reality while helping to keep the sport fun for the younger players is one of my toughest battles. In the end it is just a game and most children do not get to play the game for long enough before it becomes a job.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: There are several. First, it feeds my competitive nature. I love competition in a game time atmosphere! Second, I love showing my players that they “CAN”. In today’s world, we are all quite self aware. It is nice to see my young players (13/14/15) let go of what they think it should be, put in the hard work, and watch the benefits of that unfold on the court. Lastly, its fun!

There is something about being with a group of girls—young or old—and hearing the laughter and silly chatter that makes all of your weekly stresses disappear for the couple of hours that you are in the gym. Not to mention, for the time being, they still think I’m cool. That is quickly fading— 🙂

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: My high school coach, Ann Schilling. I had not known until I became a coach that she had had such an impact on myself, both as a coach and as a person. She taught me how to be direct, but to stay kind. She taught me how to push player’s limits without breaking them, and I also take that into the work place with my own team. Most importantly, she taught me how to work and to continue to work until you are successful.

Have you received recognition for your work? If so, please toot your horn below: Real Estate: As a small Brokerage of 4, we are in the top 300 along the Emerald Coast of Florida. Most agencies have upwards of 20+ agents contributing to their net worth. This means the 4 of us are kicking butt and competing with these larger brokerages.

Volleyball: State Champion AL 4 times with Bayside Academy, State Champion 2 times assistant coaching with Saint Paul’s Episcopal HS. Multiple tournament wins in 12/13/14/15 year age groups for travel ball.

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

To me, it is important for every woman to have a life of her own. While it is strongly connected to your family, you need something that is just yours. Whatever that may be, do it for you!
