Caroline: Co-owner of Mental Health & Wellness Private Practice

Name: Caroline Adams

Age: 29

City: Charleston, SC

Side Hustle: Mental Health Counselor

How did you get started?: It all started when my colleague, Morgan (fellow Side Hustler found here), and I started bouncing ideas around and realized that we shared the same philosophy on TRUE wellness and an approach to therapy that considers all aspects of our lives. With a shared vision, Welcoming Wellness Counseling was born. Currently we are seeing clients in private practice on the evenings and weekends. It has been so exciting to not only pursue licensure to work as a clinical counselor in private practice, but to start a business! We started the process last summer and will be seeing clients full time in the fall.

When/where do you work?: For 3 years I worked as the School Counseling Director at a title 1 middle school in Berkeley County. I have spent the last year at a middle school in Hanahan as a school counselor. My experience working with pre teens and teens in an educational setting has been SO valuable. I am enjoying branching out and working with adults, but teenagers will always be my passion! There is so much creativity and vulnerability to that age group that is so refreshing; it teaches me something new everyday.

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: It is difficult to balance a full time job with starting a practice. My husband and I are expecting our first child in just a few weeks, so that has certainly been a challenge: adjusting to pregnancy, working full time, seeing clients on the evenings and weekends, and building a practice.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: Working as a clinical counselor and owning my own practice have been goals of mine since graduate school. Although the timing isn’t perfect (when is it ever?) with a new addition to our family, this is one of the most exciting times of my life! Seeing our vision for the practice be put into fruition has been so rewarding; I really believe in what we do and how we can help others create change in their lives.

Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband has believed in me and this adventure since day one, when even I wasn’t sure if I had it in me to juggle everything at once. He is a large part of the reason I had the confidence to take the first step.

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?:

Seeing change and growth in clients is one of the most inspiring parts of what I do. There is so much power in genuinely being heard and cared for. I think that PEOPLE, the good and bad parts of them, inspire me everyday.

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: My dream is for the practice to continue to grow and be successful. We would like to eventually have offerings in all aspects of self-care and wellness: heath and nutrition, yoga and mindfulness, parenting classes, support groups, etc. My wish is for clients to truly discover their true potential and better health through peace of mind.

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?: Stay true to your vision!

Morgan: Co-owner of Mental Health & Wellness Private Practice, Pure Barre Instructor

Name: Morgan Morris

Age: 28

City: Charleston

Real Job: Elementary school counselor

Side Hustle: Pure Barre teacher, and just opened up a private practice for youth, adolescent, and adult counseling!

How did you get started?: I started my journey as a school counselor in 2014. After graduating from the The Citadel in the school counseling program I began working at Sangaree Intermediate school serving as their guidance counselor for our 3rd -5th grade students! While in graduate school, I fell in love with Pure Barre and trained to become a teacher. A dream of mine has been to open a private counseling practice, and after being in schools for four years, I felt in my heart that it was time to move on to a new challenge…a perfect time to transition into private practice. This past summer I worked on my license (LPC is the official license title), and my colleague Caroline (fellow Side Hustler found here) and I took the plunge: we opened the doors of Welcoming Wellness Counseling and are currently seeing clients part-time! I am so excited to transition into private practice full time after this school year! I plan on continuing to teach pure barre on the side 🙂

When/where do you work?: I work full time as the guidance counselor at Sangaree Intermediate School (Monday through Friday 7-3). Part-time as a Pure Barre teacher, I teach Tuesday evenings at 4:30 and Friday mornings at 5 AM (Ha!). Part-time in private practice, I see clients on Fridays and weekends…this will soon be transitioning to full-time once the school year is over (it will be my last year at Sangaree Intermediate!)

What are the challenges of your Side Hustle?: Balance! Finding balance for health, wellness, and my relationship with my husband/family/friends is absolutely the most difficult challenge. Some days I am a pro, other days not so much! Fortunately I have the most supportive husband who understands the passion I have for my work and the need for mental health for the children/adolescents/adults in our community.

What are the rewards of your Side Hustle?: I am deeply fulfilled by serving others; all three areas I work in I have the opportunity to see humans grow and give back to themselves. What more could you ask for than being a part of such a beautiful transition? Another reward is community; Pure Barre is more than just a work out, it’s an incredible community of strong supportive women who encourage and challenge each other. I feel pretty darn lucky.

Who is your greatest supporter?: My husband, Matt. Matt has been there for me since day 1 and stuck with me even when I may not have been physically or emotionally present. His support means everything to me; I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish any of these things without him. He is truly the most incredible human I know.

Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?: My parents are HUSTLERS! I grew up in an environment in which both of my parents worked, parented, coached, befriended, and loved (did I mention LOVED?). I aspire to be half of the people they are someday.

What is your dream for your Side Hustle?: Caroline and I hope to grow Welcoming Wellness into something communal, as well as individual counseling. The goal is to incorporate mindfulness sessions, yoga classes, get involved with College of Charleston…the opportunities are endless! Ultimately I’d just like to give everything I have to each client and help them find their path to wellness. In regards to Pure Barre, I hope to continue to give women 50 minutes of challenging exercise, clarity, and encouragement.

Do you have any advice for others working on a Side Hustle?:

Things will be sacrificed, but in the end they’re worth it. Stay disciplined and remind yourself that balance is key. Most importantly, be gentle with yourself.
